The Biotech Industry

Biotech companies make products that are beneficial to humans, such as medicines and therapies that can save lives, increase yields on farms, and create green fuels and chemicals. Bioinformatics is also a part of it as the study of biological processes and data. It is utilized in many different industries.

Biotech’s beginnings date back to the early 1970s, when recombinant DNA technology (genetic engineering) was developed and patentable. This technique lets scientists create production cells which then begin producing useful protein molecules.

Biotechnology is widely used in the target-discovery programs of most pharmaceutical companies today. Smaller companies are also in the pharmaceutical industry that utilize proprietary methods to develop new therapeutic drugs.

Other biotechnology applications are being studied by companies focusing on agro biology cosmetics and food technology, industrial biotechnology and nutraceuticals as well as the field of veterinary medicine. Fully integrated Pharma companies are big commercial companies that research, produce and sell generic or brand-name medicines.

Biotech is going through a transformation due to new technologies. Companies are now able to validate their platforms for conditions with understood mechanisms, such as sickle cell anemia. They can also reach greater patient populations. Some companies are trying to develop novel therapies for conditions that haven’t been addressed, such as Duchenne muscle dystrophy.
